Ilves in stereo

Ilves in stereo

3D photos from the Finnish League hockey game between Ilves and HPK. Could be the very first time when Finnish hockey moments were shot in stereo. The game toook place at Hakametsä ice hall in Tampere last Saturday. A friend of mine managed to arrange press accreditation for this experimental shoot, big thanks to him. And here is the result.

Some notes. You get best results in 3D when there is plenty of light, objects are not moving and when you can get close enough to the action. This time it was pretty dark, the game is constantly moving from one corner to the other, and action is really fast. In practice I had to shoot at ISO 1600, with shutter speed 1/400 and iris at 4.5. It still resulted in some noise and blur. Images also had to be wide angle – I was shooting at 18mm. This all adds up and creates pretty extreme conditions. Thanks to Lightroom, it managed to kill most of the noise, and with cropping the result is very neat. As far as you don’t print the pictures. High contrast advertisement banners are still pain in anaglyph, sorry about that. Looks great in 3D Vision though.

Ideally this could’ve been shot at ISO 3200, at 1/600 shutter speed and iris value at least at 9.0. Extra megapixels also wouldn’t harm. Dual Canon 5D Mark II rig at max resolution could significantly improve the quality. Couple of fixed lenses, say, 35mm, wouldn’t harm either. Ah, dreams, sweet dreams.

All photos are available in full color side-by-side, some photos are available in black and white anaglyph.
